"Redefining Health Education Through Simulation Technology"

In today's rapidly evolving healthcare landscape, the demand for highly skilled and adaptable healthcare professionals has never been greater. Challenges such as emerging diseases, technological advancements, and shifting patient demographics underscore the critical need to innovate healthcare education and training methodologies. Traditional approaches often fall short in adequately preparing providers to navigate the complexities of modern healthcare delivery. Against this backdrop, the integration of simulation technology emerges as a promising solution to bridge the gap between theory and practice. "Redefining Health Education Through Simulation Technology" seeks to address this need by harnessing the power of immersive simulations to enhance clinical abilities, communication skills, and professional behaviours among healthcare providers.

Objectives:

  1. To establish cutting-edge simulation technology capable of providing immersive and realistic training experiences for healthcare professionals.
  2. To develop and implement relevant academic courses and learning modules tailored to meet the evolving needs of healthcare education within a simulated environment.
  3. To provide comprehensive training across all healthcare stakeholders, including doctors, nurses, and paramedics, utilizing virtual training technologies to enhance their clinical competencies and patient care skills.
  4. To enhance skills through training sessions and activities facilitated by proficient Simulation-Based Learning (SVL) faculties, ensuring effective utilization of simulation technology for maximum learning outcomes.
  5. To foster collaborations with national and international eminent agencies in the healthcare and simulation technology fields, leveraging their expertise and resources to enhance education and training initiatives further.
  6. To contribute to the generation of knowledge within the healthcare community by actively engaging in research activities and disseminating findings to advance the understanding and application of simulation technology in healthcare education and practice.

Process :

The process for delivering effective healthcare simulation training at SEL & SC involves the following steps:

  1. Expert Team Composition: Our top team comprises over 15 professional academic members with diverse backgrounds in health, patient experience, biomedical engineering, group dynamics, and adult learning. This multidisciplinary team ensures that each simulation is meticulously designed and tailored to suit the individual needs of learners.
  2. Utilization of Unparalleled Experience: Leveraging the unparalleled combined healthcare simulation experience of our team, we employ methodologies derived from various disciplines to deliver comprehensive and effective healthcare simulation training. This expertise allows us to customize simulations to cater to the specific levels and backgrounds of diverse learner groups.
  3. State-of-the-Art Infrastructure: Students have access to a high-end skill training facility at DMIHER (DU), equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure including high-fidelity and low-fidelity mannequins. Experienced, trained, and certified trainers facilitate simulation training tailored to the needs of learners from varied backgrounds such as Medicine, Dental, Ayurveda, Nursing, physiotherapy, Allied Health Sciences, Pharmacy and Engineering
  4. Structured Training Modules: With over 100 structured, internally and externally validated Competency-based modules, we offer comprehensive training to undergraduate and postgraduate learners. These modules cover a wide range of skills and scenarios, addressing the curriculum needs of each stream, including nursing.
  5. Innovative Training Programs: SEL & SC pioneers training through its Standardized Patient Program (Powered by Mayo Clinic USA) and Case-Based Learning (Powered by Weill Cornell, USA), providing learners with a diverse collection of case studies and clinical scenarios aligned with nursing curriculum requirements. Additionally, Cadaveric Skill Labs offer diverse cadaveric skill training modules to enhance learning opportunities further.
  6. Assessment Facilities: The inclusion of an OSCE lab enables comprehensive assessment of learners’ skills, ensuring competency and proficiency development. This facility caters to the needs of hospital-based nursing staff, providing equal opportunities for skill development.
  7. Through this systematic process, SEL & SC aims to deliver cutting-edge healthcare simulation training, preparing learners from various healthcare disciplines to excel in their respective fields and contribute effectively to improving patient care.

Outcomes and Impact of Practice:

  1. Achieving accreditation from the American Heart Association ensures that cardiovascular care training maintains the highest standards, resulting in exemplary outcomes.
  2. Partnering with prestigious institutions like MAYO Clinic & Weil Cornell enriches the curriculum and brings significant benefits, making a notable impact.
  3. Government accreditation by N.B.E.M.S. acknowledges the program's adherence to stringent medical education standards, leading to positive impacts on healthcare quality.
  4. Over the past five years, the training of 43,484 students has markedly enhanced the competence of the healthcare workforce, resulting in tangible improvements in patient care.
  5. 25 registered copyrights on various training modules and SOP’s
  6. Pioneering the creation of a simulation-based curriculum/modules book.
  7. Providing training to government medical officers & paramedics during the COVID-19 pandemic facilitated smoother patient management, particularly in remote areas, thereby enhancing healthcare accessibility and outcomes.
